Except for mountain scenery, magical rocks and a few other children, the village where Xiaohui lives with his grandfather and two cows has nothing to offer. The nine-year-old boy greatly misses his parents who work in the city. When grandfather has to sell a calf, the clever grandson tries everything to prevent the separation of mother and son. A cry for love.

Xinying Lao is a filmmaker, writer and editor active in China and New York. A student at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, she is an MFA Candidate in the Graduate Film program - The Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film & Television. With a background in documentary and short narrative films and a degree in journalism, Xinying has had the opportunity to explore the stories of a number of people from different walks of life and convey the vulnerability they share and are usually afraid to express. His films, often observed through the perspective of a child, deconstruct the intricate layers of adulthood by highlighting the genuine essence of humanity. Xiaohui and His Cows, which received a special mention at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2023, is the film project made to conclude his second year at New York University.
